Last month Ursula over at Room to Bloom posted a nice mention of our studio and our eye chart in black & white. I’m so glad she did because it introduced us to her lovely company, her beautiful site and her blog. Her work is whimsical and wonderful and filled with inspiration. A Trip Across the Pond

Our first line of toys and eye chart prints recently made their way over to London to join Molly-Meg, a beautiful design shop for children. Molly offers a carefully selected range of furniture classics for kids, mixed with modern design pieces, and her taste is infallible.

Check out these rad chairs. Can you believe the yellow and black molded plastic chairs were originally used as car seats? A lot has changed since the 1970’s. Click on the images below to learn more about these miniature classics and to purchase.

Blossoms and the Biennial

A couple of weeks ago my friend, Karen, and I headed to the Whitney Biennial. On our way over, we became a bit distracted when we caught a glimpse of cherry blossoms down the street in Central Park. We took a brief detour over to Fifth Avenue, and somehow managed to cross the Greek Independence Day Parade to stand below these beautiful flowering trees.

We eventually made our way to the museum and got through the long line to see the work inside. Below are a couple of images of the pieces I found most intriguing.

I was immediately drawn to the group of small paintings by Andrew Masullo. The brilliant colors are what captured my attention initially, and the forms kept me looking, transfixed. His paintings make me really happy.

Beautiful sewn fabric pieces made to look like loose paint strokes. I love when one material mimics another and sort of takes you by surprise. So clever. I need to find out the name of this artist since I forgot to jot it down. Amazing work.

Our New Shop!

Our new site just launched this morning! We’re thrilled. The process has been a really positive one thanks to our web designers and developers, Makewell. They are great listeners and made the whole experience a really fun one. You know it’s a good working relationship when you become friends in the process.

Inspiration: The Supermarket

In preparation for our website (which should finally be up and running next month!), I’ve been scoping out display images for inspiration. I’m preparing to photograph our own display of our first product line, which will hopefully offer a twist to the typical online shop experience.

I came across these great vintage shots of supermarkets through my search. I totally get lost in these images, particularly in the signage and the pastels.

Today Pantone announced Tangerine Tango, a vivacious, enticing hue, as the color of the year for 2012. I happened to pick up our hand printed hang tags yesterday, which’ll be used for our first product line. Below is a sneak peek of one of the tags. I see some similarities…

Brooklyn Night Bazaar

FL4 Projects participates in its second event of the season, the Brooklyn Night Bazaar, Saturday, December 17th (5pm-1am) at 149 Kent Ave in Williamsburg. The Hold Steady plays along with a bunch of other bands. There will be tons of local food, independent design and much, much more. Come hang out!

Inspiration: Antique Button Sample Cards

We are in the throws of creating a small collection of wooden furnishings for FL4’s new product line. Through our research and development, we discovered these charming antique button sample cards, which were once used by salesmen a very long time ago (c. 1920). The shapes, the colors and the handwritten product numbers are really quite beautiful.

We have been undergoing some renovations here at FL4 to make the studio better organized and more pleasant to work in. We just acquired two beautiful Karl Blossfeldt prints to hang on the walls. I love Blossfeldt’s prints because they evoke so many visual parallels. This bold leaf immediately reminded me of Matisse’s cutouts.
